Why does my cottage roof only leak in a storm?

Because a low-pitched roof relies on the felt under the slates when wind drives rain up the slope. Once that felt has perished, storm rain gets through where ordinary rain does not. The survey checks the felt from inside the attic as well as the slates outside.

My cottage roof joins next door's. Can you work on mine alone?

Yes. The work stops where the two roofs meet, and your neighbour's slates are left as they are. If anything at the join needs their agreement, you are told before work starts.
