What makes a roof repair suit the sea air?

The materials. Copper or stainless fixings do not rust the way steel nails do, lead of a proper thickness that is clipped down stays put, and slates are fixed rather than glued.

Do dormers suffer by the sea too?

Yes, at the flashings. Old lead aprons and cheeks split, and any steel fixings in them rust. The flashing is renewed and dressed into the slate.
