My roof faces the sea. Does that matter?

It does. Sea-facing slopes take the easterly wind and lose tiles and ridges that the sheltered side keeps, so fixings and dry-fix ridges are chosen with that in mind.

Are the older slate roofs near the village repaired differently?

Yes. Slipped slates are re-fixed with copper tingles or hooks, broken ones matched with reclaimed or new natural slate, and split lead valleys relined.
