Can the roof be redone in the original slate?

Largely, yes. Reclaimed Welsh slate is used where there is enough to match, and new natural slate where there is not. The survey shows how much of your own slate is worth keeping.

Why does the leak only show after heavy rain?

Because a parapet gutter or a valley is overflowing rather than leaking all the time. Once leaves or a split stop the water getting away, it backs up under the slates and into the top floor.
